What Artichokes in Ibiza Taught Me About Local Living
Last week, Caroline and I tried a slice of artichoke focaccia at a bakery in Ibiza. It was fresh, nutty, and packed with flavor. That one bite sparked my curiosity—why are artichokes such a staple here?
As I dug deeper, I discovered something fascinating. Artichokes thrive in Ibiza because of its ideal Mediterranean climate: mild winters, warm and dry summers, and fertile, well-draining soil. It’s the perfect environment for this ancient vegetable to flourish.
But there’s more to it than just growing conditions. On Ibiza, artichokes represent a way of life that aligns with the principles of the Blue Zones—regions around the world where people live the longest and healthiest lives. Eating fresh, local, and seasonal foods is a cornerstone of well-being in these zones. Rich in antioxidants, fiber, and nutrients, artichokes fit perfectly into this philosophy.
This simple discovery made me reflect on how the choices we make every day, even small ones, can connect us to the places we live and the lives we want to lead. In Redesign, I talk about how balance starts with mindfulness—whether in the food we eat, how we spend our time or the care, we show ourselves and others.
For me, that slice of focaccia was about more than great flavor. It was a reminder to slow down, savor life’s details, and be intentional in how we live.
