Why you should stop sharing the news
In today’s world, it’s easy to feel compelled to share news stories—especially in personal messages. We might believe we’re keeping others informed or feel a subtle superiority being the first to catch an item. But as Rolf Dobelli argues in this article from The Guardian, news consumption often harms our mental health, increasing anxiety and stress.
What’s more, by sharing news directly with others, we may unknowingly impose that same negativity on them. It might seem like sharing is a way to stay connected, but the reality is that we don’t always know if the recipient is in a suitable mental space to handle your news. In this way, we may unintentionally burden them with negativity they didn’t ask for.
It’s worth reflecting on whether the news we pass along adds value—or if it simply transfers stress. In a world of challenges, choosing not to share negative stories can be a powerful way to lighten someone else’s load.
